Choose handwriting recognition
Separate line recognition from detecting handwriting on a whole page. Our current measurements cover the first task.
Prepare the right input
TrOCR receives an image crop of a text line. A full scanned letter also needs detection, segmentation and reading-order handling.
Inspect CER and errors
Character error rate is total substitutions, insertions and deletions divided by reference characters. It can exceed 100%. Compare corpus CER under the same normalization and split.
Validate your writing styles
Include unseen writers, abbreviations, crossed-out words and your target languages. Review word omissions and names as well as the average CER.

Open the full 2,915-line IAM comparison and inspect pinned versions and example outputs. The historical 256-line fixed-prefix pilot remains separate and should not be substituted for the full test.
